Sipping his butterbeer slowly, Harry waited patiently.
On the outside, he appeared calm and collected, but in fact, the opposite was true. He had taken a very large chance coming here tonight, but it was less of a risk to talk to Ace at the school. This had to be as private as possible, and while there was still a risk here at the Leaky Cauldron, a few well placed privacy spells and few galleons slipped to Tom bought the privacy he desired.
Never in his wildest dreams did he think he would be building the Order again. He thought that was all over decades ago when he defeated Tom Riddle. But here he was, doing just that, and against his own son to boot. He had hesitated for as long as he could before building, wanting to believe that James was not doing what he thought he was, but when his informants told him with certainty that James had started to build his army, he could wait no longer.
There was no doubt about some members...people like Ron, Ginny, each Weasley, and his other two children had either automatically joined or would soon, but he needed more, and that was why he was here tonight.
He had liked the new potions professor from the start, and even before this mess started, he had unconsciously counted him as an ally. Now, he hoped to make it official. He did not know why, but he knew that he could trust Ace.
The owl he had sent him yesterday asked him to meet him here two hours after dinner. Harry waited, and hoped his trust had not been misplaced.

When Ace received the owl from the Headmaster he was curious. There were only a few things that the headmaster would need to talk about but those could take place at the school. For the headmaster to ask him to go to the Leaky Cauldron was another matter. He had never really had an in depth conversation with Harry in his four years working at Hogwarts. There really wasn't any need. He was good at his job and had responsibilities of his own to deal with as house head and a professor. Slytherins could be a handful. He also knew that the headmaster was a very busy man.
Dinner ended and Ace headed back to his office. Two hours before he had to meet the headmaster. He figured he could take that time to do some shopping. Ace used flu power to head to Knockturn Alley. There were a few things he could find there that were useful in a few potions that were hard to get around the school and he wanted to give his students an interesting lesson next class.
After walking around for a while Ace had gathered the couple of things he was looking for. He started walking towards the Leakey Cauldron to meet up with the Headmaster. The professor still wasn't sure what to expect from this meeting. Ace walked up to the bar and ordered a fire whiskey before taking a seat next to the headmaster. Ace took a couple of sips before saying anything.
"Well considering the unorthodox meeting I can only confirm that this is something extremely important. So what might you need me for?" He asked in his usual charming way. Ace did not look over at his boss and once teacher. His final year at Hogwarts as a student was seven years ago. Then three years working in the ministry he went back as a teacher and now after four years he felt that the school and its students were apart of him. He believed he would do anything if it meant keeping them safe.

Harry took his time, sipping his drink as he considered what to say to his potions professor. The man was perceptive to say the least, he had caught on fast that this was no casual meeting, not that it was hard to figure out. He had barely spoken to Ace on anything but a professional or educational level for at least the past four years, something he knew that he had to change, but now was not the time for that, now was time for business.
He set down his glass with a weary sigh and turned to face his companion. "It's true this meeting is of the utmost importance. Otherwise we would be laughing it up in my office over firewhisky". Harry did not feel the need to remind himself that this had not happened yet and was not likely to happen in the near future, but he moved on.
"I have known you for a fair bit of years Ace, both as student and as a peer, and if there is one thing I can say about you, it's that you can be trusted completely. What I am about to tell..no, ask you is very important. If this info gets in the wrong hands, my life could very well be in danger. So, I ask you....can I trust you completely?"
Harry knew he was asking a lot of the man, but the situation demanded it. He looked him right in the eye to show how serious he was, and awaited his answer.

The look in the headmaster's eyes said more than his words ever could. Ace knew at that moment that this meeting would change everything for him. At first Ace was ready for this meeting but now he wasn't sure if he was fully prepared.
Ace paused for a moment thinking over his question. Yes he could be trusted but did he want that responsibility? He knew things were starting to get bad in the wizarding world but he never figured he would have to worry about it. Then again if it affected the school then it would end up involving him. Ace took another sip of his drink before answering. "Yes. You can trust me completely sir" One word, yes. That sealed whatever fate was awaiting for him now. Hecouldn't go back on it now, no matter what lay ahead.
The professor waited for the headmaster to speak again. There was tension in the air. Midnight slithered out of Ace's sleeve. He never went anywhere without his snake. Tom gave him a look when he noticed the snake on the bar but shrugged it off. It wasn't the first time Ace sat there with the snake. The black snake looked over the headmaster before hissing something to Ace. You sure about this Ace? You usually don't get involved. Ace nodded to his companion. before turning his attention back to the headmaster.

Harry sighed in relief when he received assurance that he could, indeed trust Ace. He already knew it of course, but hearing it come directly from the man's mouth reassured him just the same. He took a moment to let out a breath he did not realize he was holding in, leaned back in his chair and took a sip of his drink, looking hard at his potions professor. It was a stalling technique as he gathered his thoughts before he spoke again. Finally, taking a deep breath, he continued on.
"Thank you for your trust Ace, it means more than you can imagine. I asked you to meet me here for a very specific reason, and there is no other way to ask you what I need to without being blunt, so please forgive me".
Harry paused, then moved forward.
"I am sure that you are aware that the wizarding world is....heading toward a dark time. Perhaps darker than with Riddle. I am also aware that you may know that my eldest son is behind it all. I can go into the details of the various theories I have on why he went dark, but we can save that for later. What I need now is your help. Years ago, when Voldemort was in power, my mentor Albus Dumbledore organized a group to fight him called the Order of the Phoenix. In light of my son's actions, I have started the Order again and like James, I am recruiting members. Your skills would be a tremendous asset, so...."
Here is was, the critical moment of this conversation.
"I am humbly asking you Ace to lend your talents to the Order, to the cause of light. What do you think"?

Ace knew about the history of Voldemort and the previous war. He loved learning about those time periods. It was always fasniating and unerving. Being a muggle born himself, Ace knew that if something ever happened again in his life time then he would have to fight.
For the headmaster to ask him to join the ranks of the famous order was way beyond anything Ace could imagine. Those in the slytherin house had somewhat of a reputation of being the bad guys. Granted that was a huge misunderstanding but that didn't change how many looked at the students of that house. He would of expected to be one of the last people the headmaster would have looked to.
Ace, don't make the decision lightly. Yes this is a great honor but remember it will mean going against an old friend. You and James were thicker than thieves. Even though this is to protect the wizarding world you have to consider everything. Ace listened to his friend closely. The snake was right, as always.
"Midnight is right. This is going to be one of the hardest decisions i've had to make. James was one of my best friends and going against him goes against everything I have believed in, the very values that placed me in Slytherin all those years ago. However, I can not abandon my students and what is right. With that in mind, yes I would be honored to join the Order. Ace was hoping he made the right decision. In his gut he believed he did. James was a different person, changed and if defeating him in this war could help then Ace would do everything he could.

Harry had only been this nervous a few other times in his life, the biggest was when he asked Ginny to marry him. However, then he was reasonably certain of her answer. Now, not so much.
He sat back and watched the conversation Ace had with his pet, and not without a bit of jealously. he had lost that particular ability after Tom's defeat, but for the most part, he did not miss it. This was not one of those times. He knew of the snake of course, and he knew that he gave Ace sound advice. He just hope that this was one time where the sound advice and the advice he wanted given was the same.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, Ace gave his answer. "Midnight is right. This is going to be one of the hardest decisions i've had to make. James was one of my best friends and going against him goes against everything I have believed in, the very values that placed me in Slytherin all those years ago. However, I can not abandon my students and what is right. With that in mind, yes I would be honored to join the Order.
He let out a breath he did not know he had been holding. What Ace had just said reaffirmed the main reason Harry had hired him for the job. He was loyal to his students, his house, and his school. And while it was true that he had also been loyal to James at one point, he was as smart enough to realize that things had changed.
"Thank you Ace. I will get you more information when the time comes, but for now, rest assured that your abilities will be not only needed, but appreciated". Harry paused.
"I know you were friends with James growing up, I saw it for years, so I know how hard it must be for you now to make that decision, and it makes me appreciate it, and you even more. Once again...thank you, sincerely".

Once again...thank you, sincerely. Ace was glad that the headmaster recognized his tough decision. Midnight slithered up Ace's arm to his neck and rested there, it was the snakes favorite spot.
It was a courageous decision, let us hope it was for the best. Ace agreed with Midnight. He hoped he hadn't just made the wrong choice but his gut told him it was right. What James was doing now was wrong and not only concerned him but everyone he cared about. His own blood line was the one that James was trying to destroy. He couldn't just stand around and watch all the madness unfold.
"Let us hope for the best sir. I will see you back at the school, if you will excuse me I must be off to prepare for my next lesson" With that Ace finished his drink and stood. He nodded in respect to the headmaster before him and Midnight left the building. Ace breathed in the fresh air before apparating near the castle. He walked the rest of the way lost in his own thoughts about the future. Everything was going to change now and he couldn't be more thankful for his two years as and auror than he was right then. It was going to help him in the fight coming up.
